Listed as one of the 30 Best Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trots in America, the Charlotte Turkey Trot has been a local family tradition for the past 32 years.
Starting and finishing at the SouthPark Mall, the largest road race (9,000+) in North Carolina is a homecoming destination for extended families, old classmates, and a place to meet and celebrate with neighbors. The community comes together to kick-off the holiday season with a healthy morning run/walk before heading home to celebrate Thanksgiving with food and family.
Race founders Danny and Lesa White cultivated the family and community atmosphere of the Charlotte Turkey Trot for 31 years and are responsible for building a great local tradition. In 2020 the event transitioned to a new local ownership team that (despite the challenges of COVID-19) built on their efforts by continuing the tradition with a successful “virtual” Turkey Trot event featuring 1,500 participants.
Thanksgiving 2021 gave us the opportunity to return to a live, in-person event, and on a clear and beautiful Thanksgiving Day morning we did just that with almost 8,000 participants coming together to continue this wonderful Charlotte tradition. Our sights are already set on 2022, when we look to achieve the largest Turkey Trot in the event’s long history.
A NEW TRADITION – THANKS FOR GIVING
The Charlotte Turkey Trot is a fundraiser for Charlotte-based Samaritan’s Feet – providing shoes for underprivileged children in the Charlotte region. 20% of all sponsorship revenue will be a direct donation to Samaritan’s Feet.
The largest running event in North Carolina starts and ends in the beautiful SouthPark neighborhood of Charlotte – where 9,000 runners, walkers, and children actively participate. Thousands of family members and friends root them on. With an email list of 20,000 past participants, 15,000 in attendance on Thanksgiving morning, including 9,000 annual runners/walkers – the Charlotte Turkey Trot offers an array of marketing opportunities and all for a good cause.

A NEW THANKSGIVING TRADITION — THANKS FOR GIVING
Your registration for the Charlotte Turkey Trot will help us reach our goal to provide shoes for a minimum of 750 Charlotte-area children through Samaritan’s Feet. Samaritan’s Feet serves and inspires hope by providing shoes as the foundation for a spiritual and healthy life resulting in the advancement of education and economic opportunities. Samaritan’s Feet realizes its mission through distributions of Hope Totes filled with new shoes, socks, hygiene kit, and a Hope Note message of encouragement to children in need. They serve between 400 and 1000 people at each distribution, reminding recipients to “Be Kind and Be Well” while working with their partners to transform communities through a gift of shoes.
Participant shoe donations and 20% of all sponsorship from the 2021 Charlotte Turkey Trot will be used to establish a Samaritan’s Feet "Shoe Locker" at three Charlotte area Title 1 schools. Kept on-site at a school, a Shoe Locker is a supply of athletic shoes which are immediately available when a student has improperly fitting or worn shoes. Children in need can receive a new pair of athletic shoes quickly, allowing them to get right back into the classroom and right back onto the playground. Two hundred and fifty shoes are needed to fill a School Locker – Charlotte Turkey Trot sponsors account for two schools to have Samaritan’s Feet Shoe Lockers.
OUR WHY: A WORLD WITH ZERO SHOELESS CHILDREN.
A 2020 study showed that now 1 in 5 children in America live in poverty, up from 1 in 6 previously (Children’s Defense Fund, 2020). Additionally, Columbia University reports that since May 2020, the number of Americans in poverty has increased by 8 million. Shoes are consistently ranked in the top 5 needs for school-aged children in the United States. Worldwide, 1.5 billion people are infected with soil-transmitted diseases which could be prevented by wearing proper footwear (World Health Organization, 2013).
HOW YOU CAN HELP
You can help Samaritan’s Feet realize its mission and benefit local children in need by donating a new pair of athletic shoes. You can bring these donated shoes to the registration area on race day, VIP packet pickup and registration on October 23 at SouthPark Mall, or race week registration on November 23rd and 24th. Your registration in the Charlotte Turkey is a great way to help support this local organization. Thanks for participating and thanks for giving!
